Why Does SUI WASSER Exist? ...and Why Are We Approaching Outdoor Skincare Differently?
Because we think outdoor skincare has been approaching the problem ass-backwards.
We see a gap—between what traditional skincare is designed to do, what sunblock is designed to prevent, and what our skin actually needs over a lifetime spent outdoors.
Traditional skincare largely approaches the problem from one direction. Sun protection approaches it from another. Meanwhile, our skin is living in the middle—exposed day after day to sun, wind, cold, heat, dry air, altitude, salt, sweat, chlorine, and everything else that comes with a life outside.
That space in the middle is where we believe outdoor skincare has been missing the bigger picture.
The illustration below shows how we see that gap—and where SUI WASSER fits within it. Protection remains essential, but protection alone isn’t the destination. Our goal is to connect protection, nourishment, barrier support, recovery, and long-term maintenance into a more complete system built around healthier long-term outcomes.
In other words, we’re not trying to replace traditional skincare or sunblock. We’re trying to connect the pieces that have largely been treated separately.
About: They say a picture is worth a thousand words. We hope this image illustrates the space SUI WASSER was created to fill.
We understand that protection is essential—but it’s only part of the picture. SUI WASSER was built around a simple premise: our skin deserves more attention than we give it. What we put on our skin matters, and how we care for it over a lifetime matters.
We are developing a skincare system designed specifically for the space between traditional skincare and sun protection—addressing the ongoing environmental stress our skin encounters every day from sun, wind, cold, heat, dry air, altitude, salt, sweat, and chlorine. Our approach brings barrier support, post-exposure recovery, and daily maintenance together for people who spend a significant portion of their lives outdoors.
The goal isn’t simply younger-looking skin or anti-aging though those are often one of the side benefits. Our goal is healthier long-term outcomes: a skincare system that delivers a nutrition bath for hardworking skin, built to deliver on a simple connection—healthier skin → a healthier body → an improved state of mind.
Identifying the Gap
What doctors, the cosmetics industry, and pharmaceutical companies have had to say for decades has been remarkably consistent: protect your skin before you go outdoors. Wear sunscreen. Cover up. Reapply. Wear a hat. Seek shade. And, yes, all of that matters—it’s essential. But skin cancer rates continue to climb. We believe they’ve failed to understand the full scope of the challenge or to shift their paradigm toward a perspective that aligns with a life lived outdoors.
If you’ve spent a lifetime outdoors—whether you’re working, skiing, cycling, running, hiking, gardening, sailing, coaching, or simply spending much of your life in the outdoors—you understand that sunblock and shade are an incomplete solution. There is another part of the equation, a variable that has never been fully explored or addressed: What are you doing for your skin after repeated exposure? What are you doing at the end of the day, before you go to bed, when you head out in the morning, or over lunch to support your skin’s other basic needs?
That fundamental challenge is the core reason SUI WASSER exists. It’s our mission to rush nutrition-rich aid to your skin when it needs it most—BEFORE, AFTER, and LONG-TERM!
Protection Is Only Part of the Story
Our skin doesn’t encounter the outdoors one environmental stressor at a time.
A skier might experience UV radiation, reflected sunlight, altitude, cold, wind, and extremely dry air during the same afternoon.
A cyclist gets sun, heat, wind, sweat, road grime, and friction.
Someone working in the garden might spend hours in UV, heat, humidity, dirt, and sweat.
A sailor gets sun, wind, salt, and reflected UV from the water.
Then we come inside, wash our faces, take a shower—and often consider the job finished. But skin that has spent the entire day responding to its environment is depleted from moisture, it has been compromised in ways that sunblock or shade simply does not help. Barrier lipids can be disrupted. Skin can feel tight, hot, dry, irritated, chapped, or simply exhausted.
Protection helps reduce environmental damage. Great. That’s important. But protection and recovery aren’t the same job.
We Started With a Different Question
Most skincare starts with a product category. Let’s make a moisturizer. Let’s make an anti-aging cream. Let’s make a serum. Let’s make it smell pretty. Let’s find a fashionable ingredient and build something around it. At SUI WASSER we approach the problem from the opposite direction: What does skin that spends a lifetime outside actually need to remain healthy over a decades of use?
That question led us away from individual products and toward something larger: a system for supporting skin before exposure, after exposure, during recovery, and over the course of years.
We call that idea Skin Longevity. The goal isn’t simply to make aging skin look younger. It’s to help support skin so it can continue doing its job while we continue doing the things we love.
Your Skin Ages. Your Lifestyle Doesn’t Necessarily Follow.
This became increasingly important to us because people are remaining active much longer. We’re skiing in our 50s, 60s, 70s, and beyond. We’re riding bikes, hiking mountains, gardening, sailing, running, traveling, coaching, working outdoors, and spending more of our lives exposed to the elements. But skin changes with age. Its ability to retain moisture changes. Barrier function changes. Lipid production changes. Recovery can become slower. Years of accumulated environmental exposure begin to matter. The traditional beauty industry often looks at those changes and asks: How can we make older skin look younger?
We’re more interested in another question: How can we help older skin keep up with a younger lifestyle? That distinction is central to SUI WASSER. It influences everything we do, from the ingredients we chose, to the products we produce, to where we sell our products.
The Outdoors Is More Than UV
Sun protection is essential, but outdoor exposure isn’t synonymous with sun exposure. Skin also has to deal with: Wind. Cold. Heat. Dry air. Altitude. Salt. Sweat. Chlorine. Friction. Repeated washing. Often several at once. That’s why we don’t think of outdoor skincare as a single sunscreen problem. It’s an environmental exposure problem.
And once you look at it that way, skincare starts to look different. There is the protection phase before and during exposure. There is the post-exposure phase when stressed skin needs soothing, moisture, lipids, and barrier support.
There is recovery between outdoor days. And there is long-term maintenance for people who plan to keep doing this for decades. Those are different jobs. They shouldn’t necessarily be addressed by one product.
Why We Formulate Differently
This thinking also changed how we look at ingredients. Skincare marketing loves what we sometimes call the All-Star Ingredient. Find one ingredient with an impressive study, put it prominently on the label, and make it the hero of the formula. But skin doesn’t work that way. A great botanical oil may provide valuable fatty acids but not enough occlusion. A wax may reduce moisture loss but contribute relatively little nutritional support. An antioxidant may help address oxidative stress but do little to improve the physical feel of severely dry skin. An emollient may make skin feel wonderful while doing something entirely different from an antioxidant.
So rather than asking: What’s the best ingredient? We ask: What job needs to be done—and which combination of ingredients helps us do it? That is why our formulas can look complicated. They’re supposed to. We’re not trying to assemble a collection of All-Stars. We’re trying to build a team.
Why Balms?
This philosophy also explains why so much of SUI WASSER has been built around concentrated balms. Outdoor skin often needs something that stays put. Something that can help reduce moisture loss. Something that isn’t mostly water, that’ll evaporate quickly.
Something you can throw into a pack, ski bag, bicycle bag, boat, vehicle, or pocket and use when your skin actually needs it. Balms aren’t the answer to every skincare problem. But for people regularly dealing with wind, cold, dry air, friction, repeated environmental exposure, and chronically dry skin, we think they are an extraordinarily useful tool.
This Isn’t About Avoiding the Outdoors
Perhaps most importantly, SUI WASSER isn’t built around the idea that the outdoors is something we need to protect ourselves from. We love being outside. The sun, wind, cold, mountains, trails, gardens, water, snow, and weather are part of the lives we want to continue living.
The objective isn’t to retreat from them. It’s to take better care of the skin we’re asking to come along for the ride. That’s ultimately why SUI WASSER exists. We’re trying to build skincare from the ground up for people who intend to spend a lifetime outside.
Protect when you can. Support skin after exposure. Give it time and resources to recover. Then go outside and do it again. That’s our idea of Skin Longevity. We exist so you can enjoy the outdoors confidently.

THE SCIENCE BEHIND OUR THINKING
SUI WASSER’s approach to Skin Longevity is built around a simple idea: what happens to our skin before, during, and after environmental exposure matters. The following research helps inform our thinking about UV exposure, oxidative stress, skin-barrier function, aging, and post-exposure care.
Delayed DNA Damage After UV Exposure
This research demonstrated that certain forms of UV-induced DNA damage can continue to develop in melanocytes after UV exposure has ended, helping establish the scientific basis for studying what happens to skin during the post-exposure period.
Post-Sun Care and Delayed UV-Induced DNA Damage
This research investigated delayed formation of UV-induced DNA photoproducts and explored whether topical antioxidant ingredients applied after UV exposure could influence this process. The findings reinforce our interest in the post-exposure period as an important area of skincare research.
Environmental Conditions and Skin-Barrier Function
“Effects of Air Temperature and Relative Humidity on Skin.”
This scientific review examines how environmental conditions—including low temperature and low humidity—affect skin-barrier function. These environmental stresses are particularly relevant to people who spend significant amounts of time outdoors.
