New Research Puts the Skin Barrier at the Center of UV Damage

A new 2026 review suggests that damage to the skin barrier may be one of the earliest and most important consequences of ultraviolet exposure.

When we think about UV exposure, we usually think about sunburn, premature skin aging, or DNA damage. But a recent scientific review published in Dermatology argues that another part of the story deserves considerably more attention: the skin barrier itself.

Researchers Tian Wang, Siwen Lu, Lan Sun, and Yuxin Cheng reviewed recent evidence examining how ultraviolet radiation affects the epidermis—the outer layers of our skin.

Their conclusion is significant: impairment of the skin barrier may not simply be a later consequence of UV damage. Instead, the researchers describe it as an early and central event connecting UV-induced oxidative and DNA damage with subsequent inflammatory, immune, and microbiome changes.

At SUI WASSER, I am particularly interested in what happens to skin after environmental exposure.

People who ski, cycle, hike, run, sail, garden, farm, coach, or work outside are exposed to extensive UV radiation over extended periods of their lives. Our skin encounters combinations of sunlight, wind, cold, heat, dry air, sweat, water and friction—sometimes for hours at a time. As outdoor professionals, we do not always have ideal sun block application to protect us from UV radiation exposure.

This new research adds an interesting dimension to the emerging science surrounding outdoor skin health: protecting ourselves while we’re outside remains essential, but understanding and supporting the skin barrier deserves attention as well.

That’s an area of research we’ll continue following closely.

What Happens to the Skin Barrier After UV Exposure?

The skin barrier depends heavily on the structure of the stratum corneum, including an organized mixture of lipids and natural moisturizing factors that help retain water and protect us from the outside environment.

According to the review, UV exposure can interfere with several parts of this critical system.

UV-generated reactive oxygen species can contribute to oxidation of lipids within the stratum corneum. The researchers also discuss changes involving proteins important to barrier function, tight junctions between skin cells, natural moisturizing factors, and increased transepidermal water loss.

In other words, UV exposure isn’t only something happening deep within individual skin cells. It can affect the physical system responsible for keeping moisture in and the outside environment out.

Where SUI WASSER Fits Into the Research

This research also helps explain why we formulate SUI WASSER products around ingredients associated with antioxidant support, moisturization, skin conditioning and barrier support. Ingredients such as Vitamin E, CoQ10, jojoba, squalane, bisabolol and other plant-derived oils were selected because published research suggests that these types of ingredients may help address some of the oxidative stress, moisture loss and barrier disruption associated with environmental exposure. Our balms also create an emollient and occlusive layer that helps reduce moisture loss and condition dry, stressed skin after time outdoors.

We believe this combination represents a promising approach to post-exposure skincare, and it is one of the central ideas behind SUI WASSER. But there is an important distinction between a scientifically informed formulation and a scientifically proven treatment. SUI WASSER’s finished products have not yet been clinically tested or demonstrated to prevent, reverse or repair UV-induced cellular or DNA damage. Establishing whether our formulations can measurably affect specific markers of post-UV skin damage will require controlled laboratory and clinical research.

For now, we think of post-exposure skincare as a complement to—not a replacement for—UV protection: protect your skin before and during exposure, then replenish moisture, condition the barrier and care for your skin afterward.

Protection Still Comes First

None of this changes the first rule of responsible outdoor skincare: reduce excessive UV exposure and use appropriate sun protection.

Sunscreen, protective clothing, shade, and sensible exposure remain essential. The researchers themselves emphasize the importance of conventional UV filtering while examining how future photoprotection strategies might incorporate additional approaches, including antioxidants and other biologically active components.

The review also makes clear that considerably more clinical research is needed before many of these emerging approaches can be said to provide meaningful benefits beyond traditional UV protection.

Across the four formulations, our rationale is similar: replenish moisture, support the skin barrier and provide antioxidant-rich ingredients after environmental exposure. Published research gives us scientific reasons to investigate this approach, particularly given the roles of oxidative stress and barrier disruption following UV exposure. However, SUI WASSER’s finished products have not yet been clinically demonstrated to prevent, mitigate, reverse or repair UV-induced cellular or DNA damage. That’s a question we hope future testing can answer.
