Antioxidants After Sun Exposure: What We Use & Why

You finish a long ride, a day on the water, ten hours on the mountain, or an afternoon working outside and feel it before you see it: skin that feels warm, tight, dry, or simply spent.

Antioxidants can be a useful part of what happens next, but they are not a rescue pass for skipped sunscreen. Think of sunscreen, protective clothing, and shade as your first line of defense. Post-exposure skincare begins after the exposure has already happened.

The useful question isn’t whether antioxidants can erase a day in the sun. They can’t. It’s how antioxidants, emollients, and barrier-supporting ingredients can work together as part of a recovery routine for skin repeatedly challenged by UV radiation, wind, heat, sweat, salt water, chlorine, cold, friction, and dry air.

That’s the question behind much of what we formulate at SUI WASSER.

What Sun Exposure Leaves Behind

UV exposure can contribute to oxidative stress in the skin. In simple terms, UV radiation can generate reactive molecules known as free radicals faster than the skin’s natural antioxidant defenses can manage them.

Free radicals aren’t inherently abnormal; they’re part of normal biology. The concern is an imbalance between their production and the body’s ability to manage them.

For people who spend serious time outdoors, exposure isn’t always a neat two-hour afternoon at the beach. It’s cumulative.

A ski coach can spend eight or ten hours at altitude surrounded by reflective snow. A cyclist may be exposed through an entire century ride. Sailing combines UV with reflected sunlight, wind, and salt. Farmers, landscapers, construction workers, guides, and ski-area employees can accumulate exposure simply by doing their jobs.

And UV isn’t necessarily acting alone.

Wind + cold + low humidity + UV.

Heat + sweat + friction + UV.

Salt water + wind + reflected UV.

That combination helps explain why outdoor-exposed skin can feel dry, tight, rough, or uncomfortable at the end of the day.

Where Antioxidants Fit

Antioxidants are compounds capable of interacting with reactive molecules involved in oxidative processes.

But “contains antioxidants” doesn’t tell you very much about a skincare formula.

Different antioxidants have different chemical properties. Their stability varies. Their solubility varies. Their compatibility with oils, waxes, and other ingredients varies. Concentration matters. And an antioxidant that performs interestingly in laboratory research doesn’t automatically mean a finished skincare product containing it has demonstrated the same effect in human skin.

At SUI WASSER, we therefore don’t think of antioxidants as magic ingredients.

We think of them as one part of a formulation system.

Our balms combine selected antioxidants and antioxidant-rich botanical oils with emollients and structural lipids chosen to condition the skin, replenish oils, reduce moisture loss, and create a comfortable protective layer after demanding outdoor exposure.

The Antioxidants We Actually Formulate With

Rather than talking about antioxidants generically, here are some of the ingredients you’ll actually find across SUI WASSER formulations.

Vitamin E — Tocopherol

Vitamin E is one of the most recognizable lipid-soluble antioxidants used in skincare.

Because our balms are anhydrous—built primarily around oils, emollients, and waxes rather than water—Vitamin E is particularly well suited to the type of formulations we make.

We use Tocopherol both for its role within the oil phase and because it complements the lipid-rich character of our balms.

Vitamin C — Tetrahexyldecyl Ascorbate

Not all forms of Vitamin C behave the same way in a formulation.

SUI WASSER uses Tetrahexyldecyl Ascorbate (THDA), an oil-soluble Vitamin C derivative. That oil solubility makes it particularly interesting for concentrated, water-free balm formulations such as ours.

You’ll find THDA in products including Alpin-Glow and Recovery+, where it forms part of a broader antioxidant and skin-conditioning system.

Coenzyme Q10 — Ubiquinone

That rich yellow-orange color you may notice in some SUI WASSER formulations isn’t necessarily there for appearance.

Coenzyme Q10, or Ubiquinone, is a naturally occurring compound involved in cellular energy processes and is also used cosmetically for its antioxidant properties.

In our formulation process, CoQ10 is carefully dispersed into an oil phase before being incorporated into the finished balm. It’s a good example of why simply reading an ingredient list doesn’t tell the whole formulation story—how an ingredient is incorporated matters too.

Sea Buckthorn Berry Oil

Sea Buckthorn Berry Oil is one of the ingredients responsible for Alpin-Glow’s unmistakable warm orange-gold character.

The deeply colored oil naturally contains carotenoids and other lipid-soluble compounds and brings considerably more to the formulation than color alone.

We pair Sea Buckthorn with other oils and emollients to create the distinctive rich, concentrated character of Alpin-Glow.

High-Oleic Sunflower Oil

Sunflower oil may sound comparatively ordinary next to ingredients such as CoQ10 or Bakuchiol, but formulation isn’t a contest to find the most exotic ingredient.

High-Oleic Sunflower Oil provides a stable, emollient-rich foundation and naturally contains components including tocopherols. It helps provide the conditioning oil phase upon which more concentrated ingredients can be built.

It’s an excellent example of an ingredient doing important work without needing to be the star of the label.

Argan Oil

Pressed from the kernels of the Argania spinosa tree, Argan Oil contributes oleic and linoleic fatty acids along with naturally occurring minor components.

For SUI WASSER, its role is broader than simply “antioxidant.” Argan is a conditioning emollient that contributes richness, softness, and lipid replenishment while complementing the antioxidant-rich botanical oils around it.

That’s an important distinction.

Not every ingredient needs to do the same job.

Antioxidants Are Only Half the Story

This may be the most important part of our formulation philosophy.

We don’t believe the answer to environmentally stressed skin is simply more actives.

After exposure, skin may also need something much more fundamental:

lipids, emollience, reduced moisture loss, softness, and protection from continued environmental stress.

That’s why ingredients such as Jojoba Oil, Meadowfoam Seed Oil, Squalane, Argan Oil, High-Oleic Sunflower Oil, Coco-Caprylate, C12-15 Alkyl Benzoate, beeswax, and soy wax matter to us.

Some contribute conditioning.

Some improve spread.

Some create cushion.

Some reduce the heavy or greasy sensation that can come from a highly concentrated oil-based product.

Others create structure and help leave a persistent protective layer over the skin.

The finished balm is the system, not any single ingredient.

Recovery Is More Than One Ingredient

After a demanding day outside, start with the basics.

Get out of the elements. Cool down gradually. Drink water. Rinse away sweat, salt, chlorine, dust, or sunscreen residue with lukewarm rather than excessively hot water. Avoid aggressive scrubbing when skin already feels stressed.

Then replenish moisture and condition exposed areas.

Cheeks, nose, lips, hands, shoulders, shins, and other exposed areas can particularly benefit from a rich balm after long-duration outdoor exposure.

This is where SUI WASSER’s formulation philosophy becomes fairly simple:

Comfort the skin. Replenish what the environment has taken away. Support the skin barrier. Then let your skin do what skin already knows how to do.

Antioxidants fit inside that system rather than replacing it.

What About Bakuchiol?

Alpin-Glow introduces another interesting ingredient: Bakuchiol.

Bakuchiol is a plant-derived cosmetic active that has attracted considerable interest as a retinol alternative, particularly for improving the appearance of fine lines, pigmentation, and overall skin texture.

We don’t categorize Bakuchiol simply as another antioxidant oil. Its role in Alpin-Glow is more specialized.

That’s why Alpin-Glow combines it with THDA, CoQ10, Vitamin E, Sea Buckthorn Berry Oil, Wild Carrot Seed Oil, Bisabolol, Argan Oil, and a complex emollient system rather than asking Bakuchiol to carry the entire formula.

Again, it’s the system that matters.

Topical Versus Dietary Antioxidants

Skincare is only one piece of the picture.

Colorful fruits and vegetables, nuts, beans, herbs, tea, coffee, and other foods provide numerous antioxidant compounds and nutrients. A varied diet supports the body’s own biological systems in ways no topical balm can replace.

Topical antioxidants have a different role. They can be incorporated directly into products applied to exposed skin as part of a broader skincare routine.

Neither replaces the fundamentals:

Broad-spectrum sunscreen. Protective clothing. Shade. Hydration. Nutrition. Sleep. And sensible recovery.

For people who spend their lives outdoors, all of these strategies can work together.

The Routine Changes With the Adventure

There isn’t one perfect post-exposure routine because there isn’t one kind of outdoor exposure.

After a humid trail run, sweat and friction may dominate.

After spring skiing, it may be the combination of high-altitude UV, cold, wind, reflected sunlight, and extremely dry air.

After sailing, salt, wind, and reflected sunlight enter the equation.

After a century ride, you’re dealing with hours of UV exposure combined with sweat, heat, wind, and friction.

The environment changes. Your recovery routine should be able to respond.

If skin feels particularly hot, raw, or sensitive, this is generally not the time to experiment with aggressive exfoliating acids, retinoids, or unfamiliar high-potency skincare products.

Keep the routine simple.

Significant Sunburn Is Different

Antioxidant skincare is not a treatment for serious sunburn.

Blistering, severe pain, significant swelling, fever, chills, nausea, dizziness, dehydration, or extensive burns warrant appropriate medical attention.

Likewise, persistent rashes, cracking, oozing, infection, or irritation that doesn’t resolve shouldn’t simply be covered with another layer of balm.

SUI WASSER products are intended as cosmetic skincare—not substitutes for medical care.

Build Tomorrow Into Tonight

For us, the strongest argument for post-exposure skincare isn’t that a balm can somehow erase yesterday’s UV exposure.

It can’t.

The argument is much simpler.

People who love the outdoors are going back outside.

The cyclist has another ride. The ski coach has first chair tomorrow morning. The farmer has another field. The sailor has another race. The runner has another training day.

Protect your skin before and during exposure.

Then, when the day is finished, give it some attention.

That’s where antioxidants, botanical oils, emollients, and barrier-supporting ingredients come together—and where post-exposure skincare becomes part of preparing for tomorrow.

One addition I’d strongly consider
